Kamloops offers a wide variety of things to do in your leisure time (that is, if you can find time aside from your studies!). In the winter, both downhill and cross-country skiing, are enjoyed by many Kamloopsians. If you have never tried skiing before, Sun Peaks and Harper Mountain, our local ski slopes, offer beginners' lessons. You can rent ski equipment from sports shops or at the mountains. Skating, tobogganing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing are some of the other winter sports enjoyed in this area. Just make sure you dress warmly!!! Kamloops is very proud of our local hockey team, the Kamloops Blazers, and you may wish to go to a game or two while you’re here. In the summertime, water sports are very popular here. Kamloops is situated at the junction of two rivers (in fact, Cumcloops, the First Nations' name for Kamloops, means meeting of the waters) and there are lots of beaches to sun bathe at. You will find the locals boating, swimming, jet skiing, water skiing, and even tubing down the rivers and various near-by lakes. As we are very near to many beautiful provincial and national parks, camping, hiking, canoeing, and cycling are also very popular to do here in this area. In the summer, Kamloops becomes the tournament capital of BC, hosting many different sporting events which you can attend as a spectator. Softball and baseball are incredibly popular in Kamloops. If you wish to get involved in a team, it is best to register VERY early. For those interested in the "cowboy way" of life, there is an annual four day Cattle Drive (usually in mid-July), open to cowboys, cowgirls, dudes, and every one in between. There are also numerous rodeos and stampedes that go on through out the year. For cultural activities, on Canada's birthday (July 1), we celebrate our various multicultural origins with song, dance, food, and crafts. Through out the year, various ethnic groups sponsor a variety of cultural events. And for those interested in First Nations' culture, the Kamloops Indian Band holds one of the biggest Pow-Wows in North America. If you prefer indoor activities, there are several cinemas and theatres here, an art gallery, a local museum, and a First Nations' museum. We also get a wide variety of concerts and cultural events which come to town (or you may like to take a quick trip to Vancouver for some of the bigger events). For those of you who like to sight see, Kamloops is centrally located: Vancouver is a three and a half hour drive to the west, Banff is five hours to the east, and the Okanagan is only an hour's drive to the south-east. |
